Hello from Melbourne!

Hey everyone

My name’s Eike, I’m a German expat living in Melbourne, Australia.

Where are you in your guitar journey?
I’m 50 now, and while I had originally started on guitar in my teens, I was a drummer for most of my life. Now that I have a family and space and time are precious, I’m returning to where I first got into making music and am trying to learn guitar properly.
In terms of music, I’ve been very lucky to discover a whole ton of new music recently that I wasn’t familiar with before, from Swedish prog like Karmakanic to the understated magic of Steve Kahn. There isn’t really a style of music I dislike, there’s just music that I listen to less often.

How have you gone about learning guitar so far?
I haven’t watched anything yet, this is my first hour here. For what it’s worth, my AI recommended it when I mentioned Pat Metheny’s pick placement and asked why Marty Friedman held his pick the way he does etc and what I could do to mute better, pick better and so on.

I’m looking forward to hearing from and about people and learn to make music better

Hi Eike, welcome to the forum!

I think a great place to start would be picking a song to learn (something you’d be really stocked on if you could play it at tempo) and then you can work backwards from there.

I would highly recommend going through the primer to ascertain your natural preferences and how to maximize them.

Thank you!
Hard to choose just one o.o - but I’ve been kind of smitten with Karmakanic’s Do You Tango recently. That would be a great song to be able to play.
