How Important Is Straight Thumb in RH grip?

I am still experimenting with a primary motion and seem to go back and forth with leading edge vs trailing edge. In trailing edge it is easy for my thumb to be straight with a pick grip in between pad and side. But in the leading edge picking, the kind I use most frequently, it is hard for my thumb to stay straight with the same pick grip. I see a lot of videos with players having their thumb straight with this grip. How important is it for the thumb to be straight and what is the reason? Anybody?

I don’t think there’s a wrong way to do it, as long as you’re aware (which you are) that it’s another variable you can control with regards to pick angle.

Post some photos or everything is too nebulous.

Here is a short video to illustrate my question. Thanks

It looked to me like your thumb joint is at its two extremes of range. It is odd, but when I think of my thumb as being “straight,” I’d probably put it in the middle of its range of motion, or a bit more extended than that. Yeah, but I don’t know anything about thumbs, but I’ll bet that lots of other people around here do. :grinning:

Like Kgk said, thats such a huge difference in your two picking styles lol, but honestly various extremes are how you get a good middle ground.

Can you make a video of the underside of your pick grip? Heres a vid if it helps.

Thanks for posting the video, I will experiment with your approach. I see what you mean about finger motion, when I do that my grip is different.
