Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to smooth out your motion? I’ve been working on the primer on and off when I have the time. I have hit the stage where I have found a motion that is comfortable and works for me but I’m experiencing all sorts of random motion. I’m not exactly concerned with how long I’m taking, I’ll get there eventually. But I would like to know how long it took some of you to go from a comfortable motion with some random motion to being able to activate that motion on command with consistency.
Quite frankly, it took me like 23 years. Lots of running in circles and no CTC back then.
Constantly evolving as new techniques are learned. 30 years and still changing.
After looking at the Ctc videos it was about 4-6 months for me to get a good motion that could change strings. I got a fast tremolo sooner but it was only on a few of the strings. I don’t remember when the randomness subsided but it eventually did.
This is very typical. You get a thing working, halfway, but with high performance for the parts you can do, and then figure out the remaining pieces over time. It’s also common not to remember when things start becoming less random because it’s not usually one thing that fixes this – it’s just the motor system doing its job of figuring out small subconscious details over time.
I figured as much. While I don’t see a lot of people talk about it (admittedly I don’t spend too much time on this forum), I did note the example in the RDT tutorial where you talked about random motion at high/untrained speeds and used the MAB clip as an example. I think my biggest hurdle in getting over this is just discipline to practice. I’ve been working on this stuff on and off since around 2020 or 2021, so my results are definitely different than most around here. But I will say the progress I have made feels huge compared to where I was even a year ago. I find the experiences of other people on this forum to be encouraging. One of these days I’ll be back here being able to hit 200 bpm consistently. Appreciate the response Troy
Good to hear. Is it a safe assumption to make that you were attempting to train your motion daily or at least close to daily? I think I’ve been attempting to do about 10 minutes or so a day.
Yeah I was doing it daily. I would try to do it correctly and then take a break before attempting it again.
