How to get the most out of this site

Hi all,

I’m looking for tips on where to go for the best practice resources. I’ve been going in order through the Pickslanting Primer, which has been great for learning the theory behind the mechanics. But I would like to find some kind of guided practice routine as well to start implementing these concepts. Where would I go to find the actual exercises?

As I stated on another recent thread, I can recommend Chris Brooks’ book on alternate picking if you are looking for exercises and suggested ways of organising those exercises into a practice routine. It complements the material on this site nicely.

Awesome, I appreciate the recommendation!

The concepts and mechanics discussed on this site can be applied to a great variety of music. One of the learning approaches taught here is to choose what you want to play first, then figure out how to make it work using the CTC concepts.

You will get far more mileage out of the CTC concepts if you apply them to music you want to play rather than abstract exercises or songs you don’t care for. You will also get more mileage from thinking about what is not working in a performance and then adjusting it, than by following a rote recipe.

That said, Tommo has a tendency to write etudes that are focused around specific CTC concepts. Even those, though, can be played with multiple mechanics, especially if you adjust the fretting hand fingering to suit a given picking mechanic.

TL/DR: Apply the concepts to music you like or want to play and experiment with mechanics until it feels easy.
