First recording with the Magnet.

3 simple things: 1) tremolo on D string, 2) tremolo on G string, 3) two-string speed lick (neither fast nor clean)
DSX motion. Wrist motion. Dispiriting: tense, erratic, worse than I feared. Not sure what to do next. (Too old to quit, so that’s not an option.)

First thing I’d say is that the magnet was not created to make people feel bad 
If something sounds good and feels good, who cares what it looks like under the magnet!
Second thing: you correctly identified the motion as DSX. However, immediately after (when you say “that is really messy”) you play a lick that is not DSX-compatible.
With this particular motion, I’d get started with DSX-only phrases and make sure that these sound good. That will give you a solid foundation on which you can then try to add more complicated combinations of string changes (which may require subtle changes in the overall form, but I’d say that’s a problem for later).

If I sound ungrateful for the magnet, I apologize. I am happy to have it. I am fortunate to have access to an accurate view of my playing. Sure, I felt bad at first (-“Oh, no, I really suck!”) but after I got that out of my system, I moved on to, “Okay, what do I do going forward?”
I think the DSX motion is most natural for me.
I need, as you suggest, to focus more on phrases that suit DSX picking.
And so I shall.

Your DSX motion seems pretty good! As Tommo mentioned, the little scale fragment doesn’t want to work because it would require mixed escape to strictly alternate pick. You can solve that most easily by throwing in a pull-off, which I notated in example one - I also put in 2 other DSX ideas that should work for you.

Hey! I am DSX also! I took a swing at what you played, maybe there’s another option for playing the “unplayable” with single escape. Swiping. I know what y’all are gonna say but, if Dimeola, Batio, and Gilbert do it… Anyways, it’s an option, food for thought! Apologies in advance for the swipe haters…

I may add that to my bag of tricks later, but for now I want to focus on DSX picking until I have a better handle on it (-and more DSX-friendly vocabulary).
I’m going to work through Tommo’s Metronomic Rock course. (I may not finish but I will get further than I did the last time.
