Hey yall after a few months hiatus from here and the pursuit of trying to really nail a solid primary technique I am back at it. Lately I am struggling with keeping almost a consistent motion throughout each string. I feel on the lower strings i almost use more forearm/wrist while the higher strings i use more wrist. I feel this is also tripping me up a bit. I am trying not to get frustrated. I am also struggling hitting the volume knob on the guitar as well. One question I have for certain is: when moving up and down all the strings do I move my anchor point? Or do i keep my wrist anchored in the same spot? Anyway thank you all and good to be back! Heres a link to my TC
Looks like I can’t view your video since I’m not a masters in mechanics member. If you upload it to YouTube or somewhere else, I can check it out!
@Troy @tommo is that intentional, that mechanic videos of members are only visible to subscribers?
I think you just need to be signed into the site (not the forum, but the same login). You can’t view critiques BUT you can view public videos, which this one is. I don’t have an active membership but I can see the video here

Ooh you’re definitely right @joebegly ! Sorry @Troy and @tommo . I’ll keep the original comment up so others know about this too!
Just to clarify: which “side” feels better, the low E or high E side?
I tend to move my forearm so that the wrist angle stays more or less the same. You can tell in your video that the low E side has more radial (thumb side) wrist deviation, while the high E side has more ulnar (wrist side) wrist deviation. If you want a more consistent feel, I’d recommend moving the forearm so the wrist stays in your ideal range.
You’re adding redundant pull-off movements with your fretting hand when you descend. This is negatively affecting your synchronisation. Your picking movement itself looks solid to me, but I would encourage you to accent the first note of each six more prominantly.
Thank you! Yes i agree on synchronization.
Thank you! Ill give it a shot
I watched your TC Part 2 vid, and the picking motion looks good! However, in your chromatic example, you routinely miss the ring finger note, your pinky arriving too early (so instead of the intended notes B C C# D, you end up with B C D D). No doubt that that is making everything feel pretty off. The triplets sounded stronger (likely due to the lack of ring finger involvement).
Ok thank you! its crazy I feel like I work on my sync so much and it hardly gets better if at all. Any tips? Just go slow?
I would try to find the highest comfortable speed you can do where it’s totally accurate - record yourself and listen back at reduced speed. If you’re getting the notes right, all is well, just stick there for a while until this correct way becomes habitual. If the accuracy is low, slow down a bit until things lock together.
All that said, there isn’t a ton of utility for 1234 patterns, so I wouldn’t go totally nuts drilling this, either.
