I have DSX confusion!

Hi. I have a question about DSX, which I’ve just started working on, so maybe my question really basic and simple, I’m not sure. Here goes:

In the Primer, when Troy first introduces DSX, he discusses points of contact between the guitar and the heel of your hand and also the trigger grip. By using that set-up, your arm is naturally supinated a bit.

When I do all of the above, I find that I naturally slant my pick downwards, and I can’t quite seem to figure out how to DSX with a downward pick slant.

Further confusing matters for me, upward pick slanting is used throughout the DSX section of the primer, for example in analyzing Ardeshir’s technique.

So I guess my question is this - is DSX possible with both upward and downward pick slanting? Because it sure feels unnatural to me with downward pick slanting - I run into the tire spikes phenomenon. Or does DSX require upward pick slanting? Or to each his/her own?

Does any of this make sense? I’ve been practicing downward slant for so long that trying to switch to upward feels really unnatural. My muscle memory is resisting upward pick slant, but maybe that’s the only way to make DSX happen…

Has anyone else encountered any of these issues?

Yes. As long as the amount of pickslanting is slight, then a small ‘mismatch’ isn’t noticeable. If you experience your pick getting trapped you’re either doing the wrong motion or you’ve moved from ‘lightly supinated’ to a bit too much supination.
