I need help with upward slanting

While using upward slant picking to play three note per string scales when you switch to the next string should you start with a upstroke then after that one start with a ds

Correct
Do you have a particular question?

Like do you start with a upstroke or Downstoke and do you always start with that on every string

3NPS is 2 way pickslanting so it doesn’t really matter either way. You will have to switch between Down and Upwards Pickslant to alternate pick or even to sweep. You just have to make sure our Pickslant matches the string change. DUD= UWPS UDU= DWPS

You can start with either a upstroke OR downstroke. Whichever is more comfortable and natural to you. 3nps pure alternate would hen mean that each string change would start with the opposite pick stroke.
Low E- starts with down
A- upstroke
D-down
And so on.
As already mentioned 3nps really becomes a TWPS maneauver.
I’d suggest starting (assuming your just beginning your journey) smaller. Maybe tackle a lick on a single string only first.
Then add a single string change. Something like the Gilbert string change exercise.
B string- 12/13/15
Switch to high E- 12
Back to B-15/13
Repeat ad nauseaum. Lol

Wouldn’t I get trapped between two strings If I started very string with a different stroke

Did you watch the video? All of the questions you’ve asked so far are answered by Troy and can al be found on YouTube.

Yes I just don’t think enough things were answered

Hey welcome to the forum! Not clear what video(s) you’re referring to but search the forum for “getting started” and these things like “2wps” / “two-way pickslanting” and you’ll find plenty of good discussions and recommendations. For example our Intro to Picking Motion broadcast and the Pickslanting Primer are the main things we suggest everyone start with. Let us know if you have further questions after watching through this stuff!

When you play 3 notes per string which is an odd number, is going to make you start the next string with the opposite stroke you began. Therefore for that type or runs you’ll need Two-way pick slanting.
Since you mentioned you are an UWPS you better start with a downstroke that way you will be able to play the first 6 notes (two strings) without having to change (rotate) to downward pick slanting until you reach the 6th note to be able to land on the next string with a downstroke.
So every two strings you’ll only need to change one moment to DWPs .
I hope it helps

It’s all about how Batio conquered the scale. It made Napoleon and Julio César pale with shame if you know what I mean .

My understanding with three note per string TWPS is that it is only absolute necessary, excepting crosspicking, when doing descending runs with pure alternate picking or changing direction provided you don’t start with an upstroke and play the entire phrase with UWPS.
The intro to Racer X’s Scarified is a great example of TWPS.
The first lick which is ascending you can just use DWPS and use a sweep with a rest stroke to connect the two adjacent stings like D-U-D-D-U-D and so on. I don’t know exactly how Gilbert does it, especially since he’s changed his technique several times, but players like Michael Romeo play like this and I like the fluidity of the sweeps.

The second run in Sacrified is descending, it starts on the G string and goes down to the E.
G string - UWPS, start on a downstroke end on a downstroke.
D string - transitory toward DWPS, start on an upstroke, end on a upstroke.
A string - transitory toward UWPS, start on down, end on down.
E string - transitory toward DWPS, start on up, end on up.

By transitory I mean that the middle note of that three notes your pick will be parallel to the string.
@Troy discussed this in the MAB vid
