Importance of Edgepicking when Crosspicking

I was filming my practice of crosspicking and noticed that my movements are very inconcistent . One picktroke is tiny the other goes way up in the air and i was trying to figure out how can i fix this. I watched many crosspicking examples here on CTC interviews and noticed that there is usually alot more edgepicking than i would normally use ( i think my default grip is almost flat with very little edgepicking). So i tried it and its hard for me, but i noticed a dramatic change in concistency and economy of motion. Its not like i can suddendly crosspick, but the movements seem much more correct. It feels a bit awkward to me, but i will keep practicing it and see where it goes.

Anyone noticed something similar? Or its just something that can work equally well with a flat picking angle ( no edgepicking)?
