I found this resource and it really has helped me how to develop my inside/outside picking, which in the CTC world equates to two way pickslanting. Maybe there are some other newbs this could help out.
Can twps be done with inside picking?
Wait, yes it can. Intersting. Which one is better? It appears doing it with inside picking may be more efficient.
What do you all think?
Inside vs outside picking is a misnomer.
There are Downstroke String Chnages (Upward Pickslanting) and Upstroke String Changes (Downward pickslanting). The motion required for these individually is linear (a straight line); it is only when you start to combine the two string changes, and thus the two different picking motions, that your pick will start to follow a curved pathway- ie. 2WPS or Crosspicking. It does not matter whether the picking is inside or outside, it’s about the motion required for a certain string change. If you usually have a DWPS mechanic then you only need to change motions for a Downstroke String Change, and the opposite is true for UWPS players. This can be achieved with Forearm Rotation, or more commonly with just a different axis of wrist motion from the same arm position.
The only possible difference between inside and outside picking is that if you are swiping outside string changes; you are not making the necessary curved motion that is necessary, and this will be highlighted when doing inside string changes because those cannot be swiped like outside picking sequences can be.
While I agree that there are no differences regarding how to “escape” the plane of the strings, I maintain that there are dynamical differences in the two types of trajectories. Roughly: in outside changes you hit the string at the beginning of the acceleration phase, in the inside case you’ll hit the string when the pick has already gained velocity (and possibly in the deceleration phase - unless you’ll go for a rest stroke).
I had written a post about it somewhere, I’ll try to find it and link it here
