"Inside" Gilbert lick on Youtube mini-lesson

This one:

Didn’t see a thread about this mini-lesson, but I wanted to make sure I’ve got this right. Basically, this pattern is the famous Gilbert exercise, starting with a downstroke on the high E string, right?

I guess this is how 've always done this, so I’m also curious what the “outside” version would be. Starting with an upstroke on the high E? or, starting with the the three notes on the B string and looping that with the first one them on the one?

Either, as the string changes are the same in both of those.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about the inside/outside aspects of the lick as I simply play it with strict DSX and swiping from high to low. That said, the “standard” form I usually see is starting on the B string on a downstroke.

So almost every Vogg (Decapitated) solo is full of stacked inside Gilberts. He starts on an upstroke on the upbeat. I can’t post it right now but the first solo in Three Dimensional Defect is entirely that idea. Very cool stuff.

To your question: yes, downstroke on high E instead of upstroke is basically the play lmao sorry

Paul only plays the lick with outside picking, and when it was first demonstrated in Intense Rock, it was starting with the three notes on the B string with a downstroke.
