Is matching fingering imperative?

Hi all,

I am new and sorry if this has been discussed before. My question is while following along a lick lessons, I’m matching my alternate picking to what is used in the video. Do I need to also fret the notes with the same fingering that is used in the video? In some cases it might feel more natural to me to use the second finger where the first finger is used in the video or vice versa depending.

No not at all, if it sounds good then it is good. We are all different in our hand size etc. especially when you are working on your picking . HOWEVER, don’t be afraid of trying fingerings that don’t feel instantly great - you may come across them in pieces you want to play. In my opinion, it is a great advantage to have facility with all fingers.

Gotta agree with Picking Apprentice here - there’s definitely benefit in TRYING to match fingering from a pure “building coordination” standpoint, and there definitely may be situations where one particular fingering is WAY easier than alternative one and there’s a reason for doing something a particular way. But, for the most part, use whatever works.
