Jason Richardsons high speed 1nps picking footage

Hey everyone, I thought people would find this interesting/cool.

at 8:47 theres a great shot of Jasons right hand while he does these very fast string skipping and 1nps lines. It seems like he’s using a traditional double escape semi circle kind of wrist motion? Curious what other people think/see going on here!

Great playing! Jason is very good at these alt-picked arpeggio things. The pick is making an obvious semicircular motion as you noticed.

At a medium speed like this, around 130 bpm sixteenths, you can make more vertical / bouncy motions like you see in this clip because max efficiency isn’t needed. This is not a negative by itself – almost everyone looks bouncy when going slower. It’s very hard to tell by feel when this happens. This is why we try to start with the faster speeds and film them to see if they look flatter, while still getting (mostly) the right shape. That’s the test.

For reference, here’s what the faster technique looks like around 170 bpm sixteenths. It’s very hard to see the semicircular path without slow motion:
