I have checked out the JM lick featured in Masters of Mechanics, starting on the upstroke, uwps, 4 notes per string. Are you sure he is not playing the phrase starting on an up-beat? So the downbeats would still be down stokes? I have listened to JM for years- and used to be a mostly uwps player by accident, but I still adheared to down strokes on the beat… just a thought.
