Here my latest video.
Unfortunately I forgot to shed it with more light.
But I believe it is at least possible to see the wrist motion. But if too dark I’ll record another one
CtC is a small business, and Troy is just one man. I am sure he will get back to your TC soon!
From my perspective on your last two clips, you will need to work on your pick attack (how the pick interacts with the string). In the faster clip, you have to stop quite quickly in each attempt, and even in the latest slower clip, you can see how much you are displacing the string on each pickstroke. Smoothing out the attack (“ensmoothen”, as I saw Troy write once haha) would be a good goal.
How do you do this? You need to experiment with pick grip, edge picking amount, maybe positive pick point… try different things until your attack is less “grabby”.
Video looks great to me!
1 - Your “slow” motion at the start is definitely a wrist/forearm DBX (double-escape) motion. You can see how it “Swings” back and forth. When you pick the G string, the pick goes way over both the B and D strings. It doesn’t touch those strings at all. So, it escapes on both upstrokes and downstrokes. That’s great, it’s a good motion for general playing. The problem is, DBX motions can’t go nearly as fast as single-escape motions (USX/DSX) can.
2 - Your “fast” motion is entirely different. Watch your forearm. When you play slow, the forearm rotates. When you play fast - no rotation. This isn’t good or bad. I’m just saying the two motions are different. I also switch between motions when I play fast and slow, so do a lot of people! Your fast motion looks like wrist and some elbow motion - that’s fine.
3 - The fast motion looks “Trapped,” I think. It definitely hits the B string (you can see the B string move when the pick hits it), so it’s not DSX, and I think it hits the D string sometimes, so it’s not USX. I think it looks closer to USX, though. You have a lot of downward pickslant and I think you might be clearing over the D string sometimes?
Have you tried the Rest Stroke technique Troy talks about in his video? This technique actually looks really similar to your technique:
Basically, right now, you have a motion that can go fast, but it’s doing this:
If you just rotate your forearm very slightly, you should be able to make it USX, like this:
I also agree with @Riffdiculous - something is “grabby.” Experiment with different pickslants and edge picking.
Have you gone through the Pickslanting Primer yet?
Thanks again for your comments
I haven’t completed the Primer yet but almost. And this video I have seen and I tried and experiment already with some things. DSX and USX.
My impression is that I feel more comfortable with DSX. Certain lines are a bit easier to play with DSX (e.g. Ben Eller usx vs dsx). And even the tremolo seems to be working faster with dsx.
And yes the pick attack is definitely something I need to work. But here the same: when slant the pick for dsx it is much better
