Julian lage arpeggio picking technique

what on earth is he doing at 1:05.

I feel like when i try to do this im doing more of a string bounce vs that smooth thumb and index finger movement he is doing. Anyone know what kind of technique this is and how to practice it?

Thanks!

I don’t mean to sound dismissive, but I think this is at a low enough speed that you can probably manage it with a not-super-efficient motion, like a 3-4 on the “stringhopping to perfect DBX” scale.

I may have submitted it at half speed by accident lol

Nope, I’m watching the video at full speed!

I think that piece requires more focus on the dynamics rather than the motion itself. If you get that right, I bet the speed will just happen.

The playing is obviously sounding great!

Am I seeing correctly that he sometimes does does two downstrokes or two upstrokes in a row? This is usually a sign that the tempo is slow enough that you don’t really need a “high speed technique” (very vague I know).

So basically this performance is musically great but doesn’t tell us much about what strategies Julian would adopt at a faster tempo.
