Y’all offered great advice in my thread about which metal amp we should get, then Miles brought in a Fractal.

The preset he uses, which both he and previous band members developed, is unforgiving to say the least. Ultra-tight, dry, upper mids and treble focused. This is the actual rig and tone he actually plays through with Ice Nine Kills. The level knob was taped down to avoid on-stage mishaps.

Honestly I can’t imagine playing through a tone this sharply defined for personal practice but if you need to fit in a dense modern metal mix with synths and vocals, I get it.

The interview is great. All kinds of interesting topics including escape motion, fretting mechanics, finger length comparisons, and great use of the overhead and side cameras to visualize all this.

I also did a 35-minute six-lesson sequence just for this interview to explain all the things that are going on in his technique. It’s basically a mini course on USX technique with associated cool concepts like displacement which you may be less familiar with. Some of these topics will eventually find their way into the Primer but these lessons are specific to Miles’ interview, so you can find them on the interview page right here:
