Left hand pull off during alt picking?

Hey guys quick question (think i already know the answer)

When doing alternate picking does anyone use pull offs? For example if you do the yngwie defending pattern

E 13 10 12 13 12 10

I find my left hand is strict with every note but when speeds get up i can feel i start to use pull offs. I am still picking every pick stroke and they are synced up with the left hand but I’m just aware i can feel a change in my left hand technique from clean note fretting to ‘picked pull offs’ if thats even a thing

apologies if this has already been asked

thanks guys and gals

Well, since a pull-off is by definition a note that is not picked, then I would say it is not possible to pick every note and also use a pull-off! If you feel like something is off with respect to your hand synchronization when you play faster, then maybe it is. Filming yourself with a phone that can do slow motion, and making sure you have plenty of light when you do this, might help. An open window, during the day, but one which does not get direct sunlight, is a simple way to give yourself plenty of even light for slow motion filming.

i’ll shoot a quick video now and post it here

thanks for the reply @Troy

I notice the same thing happening to me. Instead of finger just lifting off the string like normal, it starts to engage in the same activity as a pull-off even though you’re picking every note. Happens to me in my upper 90% of speeds I’d say.

Here we go.
I’m playing the basic yngwie pattern (vid slowed to 25%)

Im picking every note however i have the sensation of pullouts happening in my left hand hand.

It it because I’m anchoring my index finger for the whole pattern perhaps?

I guess what is confusing me is i can play this cleanly i.e. lifting every finger overtime it finishes a note and changing to the next finger or i can play it where i always have my index finger anchored and then use more of a pull off motion in the last part of the lick (13 12 10) whilst picking.

oh and I’ve just realised it is not best to use a black pick and a black scratch plate for these examples :stuck_out_tongue:

@element0s

thats exactly what i was trying to say

“Video removed for violating YouTube’s terms of service.” What term of service could that be? They seem to have turned on some algorithmic video filtering lately so maybe they thing all the fleshy closeup are porny.

perhaps the close up of my g string wasn’t approprite?? i have been trouble over it in the past

erm…

That’s ridiculous. Believe it or not, we got a similar automated alert on our latest Molly Tuttle upload, but it was cleared. This was for ad monetization purposes, not general uploads. The help docs explicitly stated that the filtering was a new algorithmic feature, and might be wrong, and that clicking a “review” button would trigger a human evaluation. They seemed to be getting out ahead of the potential outrage. We clicked the button and it was cleared. But still.

its bizarre!
perhaps all the recent uploads of close up right handed wrist movements is just too much for the filters to handle? lmao

Im sure it will be sorted soon

Youtube is seriously sucking right now! I wish Vimeo or someone else would have been a competitive option. They have too much power. That aside, as long as the last note doesn’t sound twice (like if you pull off slightly before the pick) I’m sure it’s all good. Maybe try reuploading with an innocuous title.

Yeah, but still, you lost all of the monitization on the video until they cleared it. If you don’t meet a 1000 view per week threshold on the video in question, they won’t manually review it. So you are lucky there.

I’m having all kinds of problems with YouTube right now, man.

@Tom_h let us know if they make you take that strike. So let me guess, the stupid AI computer thinks your arm is 2 naked bodys smacking?

Vimeo or somebody needs to step it up and give YouTube revenue competition for creators. We need somewhere to go.

so my video is back up? @Troy @Hanky_Pooh
not sure about the strike? can’t seem to find anywhere that says if its gone from my account or not?

Back to the question: seems lile I do pull-offs too. And for me it’s the only way to quickly get finger off the string without much movement. In other case I get ‘flying fingers’… although these pull-offs are not like regular pullofs. They are like ‘bad pull-offs’ which don’t produce much sound

Go to “creator studio” when you are logged in. Click on “channel” from the list on the left. It should show your standings with strikes, etc…
