TLDR: Looking for a Roadmap to achieve my goal of going from (late)Beginner to Mastering instrumental Prog Metal (preferably without an in-person teacher)
Also if this is in the wrong category I’m sorry! I wasn’t sure if it would be better in Harmony&Music Theory or in Introduce Yourself (since it’s a pretty long text about myself)
Hello Guys!
let me preface this by saying that I’m pretty much a Beginner / late Beginner.
I’ve always had that “itch” to express myself creatively through music but never had the means to start.
When I bought my first guitar (it was an acoustic) at 19 years old (I’m 27 now) I was really happy that I could start learning my favorite songs - learned a few Video Game songs here and there and some mainstream songs but that didn’t feel right. That in combination with me moving to a different country made me drop the hobby for a while.
Once I got settled in Germany (originally I am from Greece) I thought that I might aswell try it out again with the Guitar but this time I would get an electric, since that’s where my most favorite Bands were (I’m really into metal and prog metal, power metal but also punk). Got myself Rocksmith and downloaded some songs to learn. The punk songs were really simple to learn since they’re just powerchords and rythm playing, but I really struggled on the more technical songs and the solo part of each song which frustrated me by quiet a bit to the point where I was really conviced that I would never be able to really play like the people I hear in Music Stores or in Bands.
I was looking at some online lessons but I just couldn’t find a way to find any Information on a “Roadmap” to becoming a good guitarist.
And with Roadmap I mean getting a structured plan on how to get from being a absolute Beginner to going to an Intermediate level and finally to becoming a Advanced player.
I was always looking through many different sources and never really felt like I was really learning anything. It always felt like online instructions are keeping most information behind a paywall or something, it’s hard to explain but I always felt like something was missing.
So with all that I dropped the hobby again for two years.
Now that I’m close to finishing University I was thinking of trying it out again, trying to become a good guitarist to record songs for myself at home.
I am really determined and ready to practice as much as needed and learn as much theory as needed to achieve that goal. But I really have no idea how.
I was thinking of looking up Music schools and look into their curriculum what systematic approach they have for people actually studying music / guitar and maybe trying to figure this out myself.
But before I’d do that I thought of asking you guys!
My end goal would be to “master” progressive metal, specifically the instrumental side of prog metal, and produce my own songs, not to publish or anything but just to express myself in that way!
My favorite Band I listen to is a guy called “Plini”.
Really love his songs!
I also like Fusion (check out Max Ostro - Promenade, on Youtube love that song) but my main focus would be Instrumental Prog Metal.
I would really appreciate any insights and opinions from you guys on how I could go about making a Roadmap of sorts for myself to maybe achieve this goal - and it really does not matter how long it takes to get to that level! The only thing I’m not ready to do is get in-person lessons.
I’ve wasted quiet a bit of money on bad teachers and literally learned nothing from them…
(Sorry if some wording seems strange to you guys, but English is not my first language!)
