How would marty play a 3nps major scale up n down? Any examples I can check out?
Marty is exclusively an upstroke escape player. So he cannot do pure three-note-per-string alternate picking. Any of the examples in the Pickslanting Primer or Volcano seminar that demonstrate sweeping and pulloffs working together will illustrate the basic concept of how to get around that limitation. It doesn’t sound the same as pure alternate, but it doesn’t sound “worse” either. After all, nobody ever complained about Yngwie doing this and most people didn’t even know until our stuff came out.
Eco and pull offs I assume?
I watched the marty episode but can’t remember any pure ascending/descending scale run, I’m wondering if there are any examples over his career?
We haven’t done any instructional stuff on Marty that I recall. But since he locks into upstrok escape / downward pickslanting the whole time, generally speaking the same concepts apply to him as they do Yngwie and Eric Johnson. The use of pulloffs and sweeping to get around the limitations of this approach is covered pretty thoroughly in the Primer and the Volcano seminar, so I recommend hitting those again for a refresher if you like.
There are some three note per string harmony patterns in Speed Metal Symphony, here is a live video, but it’s of poor quality. There are some obvious 3nps legato runs happening. Mind you, this was 30 years ago so I’m sure he would do it different now.
I watched the interview, great stuff, wish there was more.
I’m ok on getting a 3nps to work with the gypsy jazz style, I’m more looking for inspiration, knowing exactly how Marty does it gives a psychological thrill. Inspirational.
I’ll recheck the primers tho
I wish the cacophony stuff was recorded better, they really were special. Jasons a powerhouse of skill, and Marty looks as good as he plays, unique a awesome
