My favourite trailing edge pickers

If there is one player I feel doesn’t get enough credit it’s Bruce Bouillet. Anyone who can harmonise with Paul Gilbert blows my mind. Plus, he has a really cool trailing edge picking technique. What do you guys think?:

Bouillet shreds man. I’ve never gotten rid of those 2 live Racer X albums that I ordered from Mike Varney 20 years ago.

That’s why you should consider where you put your talent sometimes. Especially in 2 guitar bands. The more popular guy will get the credit for all the guitar work. Not that Paul Gilbert needed any credit, I’m just saying.

A perfect example of this is Pete Blakk. He played a lot of the badass leads in 3 King Diamond albums. All that work credit goes to Andy LaRocque. Pete Who???

For those who don’t know King Diamond, Slash got credit for everything Izzy wrote. lol.

Paul Gilbert picked this way until he seen Yngwie. You wanna see a badass trailing edge picker? Here is my buddy Valentino. lol

Amazing technique and playing! Interesting how he changes pick angle when sweeping too.

There are a lack of good Bruce playing live and in the studio video on YouTube, but here is a recentish one of him and PG.

I first started playing with the trailing edge. It wasn’t a conscious decision so I can’t say if it felt more natural or if it was just random.

My teacher at the time pointed it out to me, and said playing that way would make it impossible for me to do certain lines involving pinch harmonics. At that point I switched because harmonics are the nuts.

In the first video you’ll see him switching to leading edge to do harmonics.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA, I love it bro. Bouillet looks like Brian Adams. Bouillet/Gilbert is my favorite guitar duo. They fricking shred bro. lmao.

I think that is Paul’s wife playing keys.

Dude, I see that! So he can probably play well using leading edge but chooses not to. I wonder if there is a specific reason why.

Bruce used to play using a “regular” pick grip -

I’m going to guess he changed grip as he had some hand problems a lot of years ago, maybe trailing edge makes it easier for him to pick fast?

Paul Gilbert did a google hangout for Artistworks last year that included Bouillet as a guest:

Thanks @Frylock ! I’m gonna watch this when I get home from work. Looks really good, hopefully they talk technique a little bit.

Another one of my favourite trailing edge pickers is Adam Rogers… Here he is playing an unaccompanied solo and you can see him using some economy picking:

Some more economy picking with trailing edge picking:

would love to get @Troy’s analysis on his picking.

WHoooa

Seems like Adam Rogers made an anchor point in his pickguard and uses it with his right hand’s pinky nail (see the 2nd video).

His technique is beautiful to watch, like Eddie’s trem picking. It flows very nicely.
