Nili Brosh technique?

Just watched Nili Brosh’s cover of Cliffs of Dover, and I was struck by how unusual her right hand technique looks (at least to me).

I think she appears to be mostly a DSX player, so that explains some of it (what with Eric’s USX technique), but her motion still appears really interesting to me. I think it’s the open-hand, hockey stick style of playing that stands out the most. You don’t see that very often.

Her cover of “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy” shows her using her elbow to tremolo pick:

It almost seems like Vinnie Moore may be the closest comparison? Thoughts?

Yep looks Vinnie Moorish to me, even the bent thumb looks exactly the same, does look like she uses a bit more legato in general though, and she’s using a lot of hybrid picking which Vinnie also uses a lot more nowadays aswell. In the EJ cover she’s using a lot more legato in the EJ phrases where he would pick the whole thing, like those pentatonic fives and stuff. That to me, is a great indication of her being a DSX player as she is not picking those sequences that absolutely require USX motion for a fully picked approach, and then on her descending three note per string runs just seems she uses the classical MAB approach of DSX plus swiping. And seems she might avoid two way pickslanting ascending???

Agree, very Vinnie Moore-esque and extremely versatile within that system.

Tony MacAlpine has hired her to play with him on tour:

Not to blow my own horn*, but she is a perfect example how far you can take the Metronomic Rock DSX techniques to play almost anything!

Edit: well this one probably uses a couple techniques beyond what I cover in MR:

*but of course I will

Would Nili’s and Vinnie’s technique be an example of DT?

Now I’m wondering about MacAlpine’s right hand technique, I remember Troy saying he stealthily infuses a bit of legato, but here it doesn’t look like it and it’s blazing fast. Definitely looks like wrist motion, on the Tears of sahara version on EMGtv he does do legato on the descending fours sequence on the main theme whereas Nili looks like DSX plus swiping.

I am a big fan of Tony’s. When he’s going to play a fast alternate picked line, he adopts a different hand position than what he uses at other times: very supinated, and the motion is pretty close to flexion/extension, you can see his knuckles are almost aiming down towards the floor.

Hammer-ons-from-nowhere are definitely part of his technique (for example, he’ll frequently play a sweep arpeggio ascending, but then use only hammers descending), so I wouldn’t be surprised if they slip in here and there in spots one might not expect (like a line with a lot of alternate picking).

Oh yes looks like a very tall ergonomic mouse position!

Oh that’s really interesting, I’ve seen some USX players do that approach with arpeggios.
