Overall technique critique please! TY

First post here. Even after playing for 30 years I am still figuring things out.

I tend to dig my right palm into the top of the guitar (above the strings) and use it as an anchor. It works for DSX the problem is I have to come from the the other angle (below the strings) for USX:

DSX - 2’s (with 4’s at the top E and bottom E to maintain DSX)

USX - 2’s

Here on the 3’s I have to switch between DSX and USX each string

With the Gilbert 6’s I am much faster descending with my palm anchoring my hand in at the top than I am ascending when I can’t anchor my hand above the strings or it would mute them (I think)

So any and all suggestions welcome. I’m trying to figure out the most efficient place to Position my hand for USX and DSX, pick grip, wrist/arm motion, etc.

**Jumping back in forth between anchoring my palm above the strings for DSX and the Anchoring my fingers below the strings for USX is a bit drastic and is slowing me down (I think)

I’m also trying to build speed and efficiency.

Thank you to the guys who run this site and to everyone on this forum. I’m excited to take my playing to another level. Thanks.

Hello John,

The Pickslanting Primer answers these questions in the Picking Motion Tutorials. I would recommend a Masters in Mechanics Subscription because you get Primer, full site access, and ability to submit critique with CtC instructors.

The Primer starts with finding your quick easy motion, getting it to guitar as quick and easy tremolo, chunking rhythm then hands on one string (maybe jump to Synchronicity seminar for core concepts and rudiments), once sync is good try changing a string, then 3, 4 etc. If stuck, make a critique and be sure to follow video settings instructions.

After, maybe try learning other escape motion following same steps. Once you have DSX and USX, you will want to review the Antigravity seminar to learn how to use both for odd note per string alternate picking.

So, let us start at beginning: do you have a fast tap test? Do you have a fast and easy tremolo on one string? Do you have good hand sync at tremolo or close to tremolo speed?

Keeping sharing videos as you tackle these steps/milestones. I too find ascending a bit harder for string tracking regardless of USX or DSX. Something I am sure active problem solving will fix
