Palm-muting Problems and Gesture Problems

Let’s talk about my background first.I used to be upward-pickslanting guitarist for a long time, however, its inevitable that it produces lots of noises from other strings and because of lack of awareness about palm-muting. After changing a new guitar teacher, he told me that my gesture was wrong and thus corrected my gesture so it became better.( may be because the old gesture so I could only adopt the upward-pickslanting position).

Nevertheless, the new teacher and old teacher also told me that the only way to build up picking technique is to use wrist motion but I got used to use arm for very long period and I feel very uncomfortable and create lots of tension by using wrist, so I am wondering if I keep using my method ( arm) or not? If I keep my gesture , how could I improve it ? How could I do better for palm-muting?

Here is the video , Hope that somebody could help me , I am really in a dilemma.

Your motion looks pretty uncomfortable to me. If you want to do DWPS, I think it is worth it try and find something that is more sustainable. Try laying the pinky edge of your hand onto the bridge and using forearm rotation. It won’t feel normal at first, but that is just because you aren’t used to it. Watch Troy’s video on the basic motion patterns and try them all! I don’t think that your current motion is very consistent or accurate. Your current motion is very UWPS oriented.

Yes! But I just start training this current gesture to be palm-muting so it may seem very bad, but I used to get more worse than this video( produce noises) , it looks like I have improved a lots throughout this period. I tried the downward pickslanting technique for weeks , I felt so many tensions on my wrist and I kept trying to relax and ultimately reached 200bpm(eighth) then I couldnot do it anymore, when I reached 200bpm(8), the feeling of the downward pickslanting somehow turn into the video’s one, Seem like I could not ‘filter out’ the old gesture. So how could I solve this problem ? Thank you so much!

Post a video of your downwards slanting motion that you said made your wrist feel tight. It might be different from what you think it is!
