Picking technique vs muted unmuted strings?

HI, I’ve been a member since 2015ish.Through this program I’ve learned that I’m an upward pickslanter, i.e downstroke escapes the strings. Even though this way of picking doesn’t look nice compared to my idols, it works. I can pick fast and unplugged the sound is loud without effort. All good in other words… until I want to mute the strings… With muted strings I’ve to position hand in a downward pick slanting way ( upstroke escapes the strings) in order for me to mute the strings with my palm. By doing so I cannot hold the pick in the same way and the picking feels insecure and not as direct as my “normal” way of picking (unmuted). Any tips of how to get a good rhythm fast picking motion when muting the strings (metal chugging on the 3 thicker strings)? As long as a slant the picking hand in the other direction everything falls apart. … I haven’t seen this issue posted before so … here we go … I

I’m a USX player, so my help may not actually help.

Have you explored muting with your fretting hand? With a downward escape, your left hand is in the better position to deal with unwanted noise. IMHO - even on the same string, muting is always a combination of both hands.

It would be helpful to see a video of the situation you’re having trouble with.

I think he wants “palm muting” more so than “noise control” though, just looking at the comment he made about metal chugging. No disagreement otherwise though. The fretting hand is definitely critical to dampening

Al Di Meola does lots of palm muting and he is DSX. @Dramarc One thing to remember about DSX is that you don’t have to use an upward slant to still get that trajectory. You can flatten out a little and still be DSX. I have also seen DSX players mute not so much with that fleshy “karate chop” side of the hand, but closer to the palm heel where it meets the wrist.

Anton Oparin demos it here:

EDIT:
Also Troy and Andy talk about muting at length…somewhere in here. I’ll try to find the exact spot:

EDIT #2: got it. It’s around 1:03 minutes in there. Andy is primary DSX so in theory this should work

This would be EDIT #3 lol but I thought I’d just do another post. Watching that Andy Wood interview again made me want to rewatch his acoustic interview. He talks a lot about muting in that one too.

That should be cued up for you but it’s at like 1:02:30

Pretty crazy how almost down to the minute in both interviews they talk about muting

The important think is that palm heel area right where the wrist and hand meet. That should allow you to keep DSX comfortably while muting.
