Question about crosspicking and the clock

Been loving the new clock analogy! Really has helped me dial in more accurately to the direction of the movements.

Quick question. (Assuming I have this right)
-For supinated DWPS it’s 9:00 to 0. For supinated crosspicking as I understand it’s 2:00 on the down strokes and 9:00 on the ups.

-For pronated UWPS it’s 2:00 to 0. For pronated crosspicking it’s 3:00 to 10:00.

Just was wondering why for the pronated crosspicking picking, why it changes from 2:00 to 3:00 and doesn’t change with supination with 9:00? I understand, because I think it would then turn into string hopping. But curious why the numbers change for supination and not pronated? Just trying to wrap my head around why it changes one way and not the other.

9:00 and 3:00 are the endpoints of wrist deviation (9:00 for radial deviation, 3:00 for ulnar deviation). Wrist-based supinated crosspicking is a blend of deviation (9:00 to 0) and “reverse dart-thrower” (0 to 2:00) oscillating back and forth. Wrist-based pronated crosspicking is a blend of “dart thrower” (10:00 to 0) and deviation (0 to 3:00) oscillating back and forth.

Rereading your question, I think the source of your confusion is where you say “For pronated UWPS it’s 2:00 to 0”. I don’t think Troy said that in the workship, or if he did, perhaps he briefly misspoke? Per the “Doctor Strange” analogy, the clock is always oriented so that strict ulnar devation is 0 to 3:00, and strict radial deviation is 0 to 9:00. Regardless of pronation or supination, 9:00 and 3:00 are defined to align with the strict deviation movements.

And note that the clock visualization isn’t meant to prescribe precise angles for your movements, but rather to make the point that wrist-based crosspicking can’t be “wrist deviation” on both sides of the string (it wouldn’t be able to escape in both directions): if it’s “wrist deviation” on one side, the other side needs to be something else (dart thrower in the pronated case or reverse dart-thrower in the supinated case).

Ahh okay! That makes totally sense then.

For some weird reason I thought Troy said regular pronated uwps was 2:00 to 0.
