Been playing for 30 plus years. Started out with really bad technique. Bouncing up and down and movement from the finger joints on the right hand alternate picking. Tried everything…either could play at fast tempos above 120 16th notes with tremolo style picking (left hand is hoping to catch the notes right) or playing controlled bad technique topping out at about 100 bpm. Couldn’t really play anything between 105 and 115. Right hand kind of shakes in certain places where the movements felt weak. So I noticed that I would play differently going fast vs slow.
At this point I realized that my technique was totally different fast vs. slow
So I abandoned the finger movement’s and have been on a journey relearning alternate picking. Trying to take how I played fast and just do those more efficient movements slower. Been doing this for about 3 years. Very slow, painful and frustrating.
I have recently believe that I am starting to feel comfortable in this new way of playing. Training myself to do this a very very slow, repetitive, consistent way tweaking slightly each day.
This has taken my playing much slower as I don’t want to push and reinforce the bad habits. Shaking is starting to fade as I feel the muscles and nerve pathways rally around these new movements.
So every once in a while I will play with abandon and notice that I am able to do things I have never been able to do so easily before. I want to take this to the next level which is why I joined this site finally.
Lets see if I can keep the momentum moving…
