Should I always use a pick?

I’m wondering if my fixation on single-escaped motion to the exclusion of all else is wise, given that I had not seen techniques like the following until I had fully consumed 1980’s guitar-flavored KoolAid; I’m thinking “ditch the pick” at low to medium speeds when it makes sense (much of the time?), and then use a plectrum as needed. Thoughts? I’ll get a headless 4 string bass soon and see what happens, mainly to expand my horizons.

I play with and without a pick all the time. Do everything within your power to make the sound you want.

Do whatever you want dude, it’s your music and playing.

A great excuse to post this video, which I’ve started at the beginning because it’s sooo goood.

Go watch Paco DeLucia. I was studying with a dude who could do that with his fingers AND a pick.
