Second vid from me after just learning to trem pick a couple of days ago. Feedback from a couple of members identified my motion as elbow with DSX. I’m now trying to string switch at speed with DSX before I tackle any licks and decided to film the slo-mo because it doesn’t feel very fluid. Any feedback greatly appreciated
I think any experts are going to need to see a decent duration in the normal speed to make a fair assessment. Seeing ultra slow footage makes telling how fluid something is pretty difficult. The last 2 seconds are a perfect example of what’s needed…so if you can replicate that for about 10 seconds straight, you’ll get some good feedback Otherwise, I’d say your filming angle and contrast of pick color/guitar body are nice!
Agree with Joe, normal speed would be useful! However, judging by the very brief normal-speed segment at the end, I don’t see any big problems!
Did you record and listen back critically? Sometimes because something feels a bit awkward / new you may convince yourself that it sounds bad …when it actually doesn’t!
I just filmed again. Think I rushed it a bit because my hand felt jerky and you can hear a bit where I pause like I’m over-thinking it. Trying not to be too hard on myself as I’m taking on a lot of new stuff but keen to get this right!
I would say this is going well! To my ears the transitions are smooth enough. Whatever mini-irregularities you are sensing are not really coming across, and I think they’ll get better as you do more of this. If they don’t, we can take another look at it later
In any case I think you did enough open string tremolo at this point I would start incorporating some interesting licks with the fretting hand, making sure you always change strings after downstroke (for the time being at least).
Thanks Tommo - that’s very reassuring! I’ll seek out some licks and apply the DSX change. Is there a library of exercises or licks somewhere on the site for this kind of practice? I guess I could just pick any lick though so I’ll get going and post progress later for more critique and support. Thanks!
We have tons of licks of all sorts scattered around in the interviews and lessons, but they are not currently organised as DSX, USX etc.
There are several ways to go about it: you can seek out the DSX-compatible licks, or you can take any lick you want and see if you can turn it into DSX by doing things like:
- re-arranging the fretting
- EDIT: starting with upstroke
- adding hammer-ons and pull-offs in strategic points
- changing the lick so it sounds 90% the same but it becomes DSX
Looks pretty good. Similar to my technique I think (kind of a mix of elbow/wrist simultaneously).
A lot of the Yngwie descending stuff from the seminar can be done DSX by just reversing the picking and you don’t have to change the fretting hand moves in any way.
oh dear - now I uncover another challenge with fretting and hand-sync!
