Someone help me with Guthrie Govan’s technique.”

Hi! Please someone help me!

I’m new to this whole pickslanting thing — I actually just made my account recently — and I’d like a bit of help. I’ve always been fascinated by Guthrie Govan; I really love his style.

Could someone tell me what his pickslanting technique is? Please, without complicated words. If someone could send me a Troy Grady video explaining that same technique, that would be awesome.

Thanks!

There is some discussion of Guthrie’s technique and several others in this video by Anton Oparin:

Disagree with a couple things Anton says here. He makes the point that having different techniques at different speeds is messing up Guthrie’s sync but Troy’s recent video on Warp Three disproves that and showcases that it’s basically impossible to have the same technique at slow and fast speeds:

He also makes the point at 35:42 that Guthrie’s radial muscle is too tense but he’s just describing the typical arm position of a Dart Thrower player and he is perceiving this as incorrect because he himself is a Reverse Dart player

So then the conclusion would be…?

Sorry man, but at what minute do they talk about Guthrie Govan?”

The main part about Guthrie is 44-45 minutes in, but he gets some mentions later too.

Bringing up Anton Oparin’s approach here on the CtC forum is kind of silly, given they’re almost completely diametrically opposed. Especially since the main reason Anton was discussing Guthrie’ technique was so he could shit on it and explain why he’s better.

Could you show me a video that actually explains Guthrie Govan’s technique?

Why do you need to use his technique exactly?

The truth is I’m a huge fan of Guthrie Govan. I’m naturally an upward pickslanter, and some of his licks or phrases are hard for me because he uses a different technique. I’d also like to learn John Petrucci’s technique — it’s simply amazing.

if the problem is “I have a technique that is fast enough to play Guthrie’s lines but his specific lines trip me up” then the solution is to rearrange the lines to suit the technique you do have

Welcome to the forum!

Learning another player’s technique isn’t really as simple as it might sound on the surface. Check out Troy’s video on it here:
