South American Requinto: When shred = feeling

Hello fellow strict-alternate-pickers :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

There is a guitar playing style that developed in South America and Mexico in the early 20th century, especially devoted to express emotion through virtuosity. And the weapon of choice is the South American requinto (not to be confused with the requinto commonly played in northern Mexico that is referenced in the CTC primer). This is a very short scale guitar tuned in A standard, and usually features great access to the higher registers because the requinto is used almost exclusively for soloing with either picado technique or with a pick.

The playing style shows a resemblance to Flamenco and the lyrics revolve around stories of emotional struggles, heavy drinking and heartbreak. In a way, it’s our local equivalent to the blues but without the “Gilmour did it better because he plays slow” BS (There, I said it! :laughing: ). On the contrary, fast playing is usually interpreted as making the requinto “cry.”
