Speed training in Guitar Pro

So this works fairly well for me for getting faster.

There’s a couple ways of going about this, but at the very least you’re going to need Guitar Pro 5 and up, a pair of headphones of some sort and the need for speed.

I have Guitar Pro 5 so I’ll be using that as a reference.

I have a pedalboard with a soundcard, and I have Guitar Pro set to play out of my board and into my headphones. I have the Guitar Pro track hard panned right and my guitar panned hard left on my board.

If you don’t have a similar setup, just plug headphones into your computer and have them on ear, or however it works comfortably for you, but it’s important to have one ear facing the amp while the other ear hears the Guitar Pro file. The idea is to have the GP file as a reference playing in one ear, while you hear your guitar in another ear trying to MATCH the Guitar Pro file, and you’ll hear right away if you’re not matching the Guitar Pro file because MIDI doesn’t lie.

You can access the Speed Trainer in Guitar Pro 5 by pressing F9(on a PC) or by accessing it in the ‘Sound’ tab. Click the ‘Speed Trainer’ portion. It’s defaulted at 50% to 100% and increases tempo at 5%. If you’re comfortable with that, leave it there.

Take an exercise or lick you want to improve on, and for convenience sake let’s say it’s a 2 bar run of 16th notes at 180bpm and press play. Select those two bars and get to it.

Hope this is as useful for you as it is for me!
