Stucked on an upstroke while having a DWPS (I suppose)

Hello guys,

This is my first post here so bear with me if I’m being unclear.
I working on a picking sequence found in the solo of No More Tears from Ozzy.
The problem is that the sequence is a 6 notes based on the first pentatonic box with 4 notes on the high E string and 2 on the B string, I have a DWPS so this would supposely be easy since I should never be trapped in the strings but when escaing the last note on the upstroke on the B string when trying to go back to the high E string for the downstroke I kinf of get stucked which I find it odd.

The sequence is (standard tuning)
e -12-9-12-9-
B ---------------12-9

and then repeat

I recorded this clip using the magnet for the first time si I’m sorry if it’s not clear enough.

Thanks again for the help !

Here is the video:

A few things come to mind:

  1. Next time use a white pick against a dark background! It’s pretty hard to see what’s going on.

  2. Have you tried different grips? It looks like the pick is not perpendicular to the trajectory, ie it will get stuck on either up- or downstrokes.

  3. Are you sure your motion escapes on the upstrokes at speed?

I have great difficulty with this lick too! Have you ever tried economy picking it?

Hey @Johannes , thanks a lor for your feedback, I posted a video with a flashier pick hope it help, at speed I feel like the first 6 notes are smooth but when escaping the last note with an upstroke on the B string and going back with a downstroke on the high E is where I feel stucked, in the clip I think we see clearly that I escape with upstrokes I think.
Regarding the motion I don’t know I feel like I’m more of a wrist player but the notion of dart or reverse dart is realy blurry for me.
What do you mean by having the pick perpendicular to the trajectory? I thought the pick whould be angled a bit downwards to facilitate escape on uptrokes?

Hey thanks for the comment, I tried to economy it but the inside picking feels very challenging to me and at speed it gets so messy, plus I need you don’t get the right note separation with that method but I’m not sure

Yes, the note separation with economy can be tricky to get right. The only person I have heard doing it cleanly and evenly is Brandon Ellis. Having said that, I’m guessing at higher speed it doesn’t really matter that much, as long as you’re hitting the desired note on each beat.
