I’ve been working on the subtlety’s of DWPS for a while. Experimenting with different aspects of my playing. I’m playing fairly supinated fyi, with my pinky against the pickguard for support, but just grazing it, not attached.
As an example, I’ve always noticed there was some slight tension when playing spiders for instance, 4 notes per string. What I think I figured out is this, and it was insanely subtle.
When descending, particularly when I get to the A and low E string, I notice my hand moves a few centimeters towards the guitar (maybe not even). If I put this on the clock, it would be a few centimeters south of neutral towards 6:00. I think I do this because the pick is further away on the 2 low strings with DWPS.
In clock terms, I forced myself to keep the hand as much at 0 as possible, and really focus in on 0 to 9:00 for wrist deviation. So in order for me to reach the 5th and 6th string, I have to lift the hand up subtlety. Meaning my range of motion for the top 4 strings is pretty much all there, so I don’t really have to adjust the hand at all.
I don’t think this would be something I would ever notice unless the clock analogy was given. I can really dial in every aspect through the numbers.
Just curious, has anyone experienced this before? Am I making the right choice by moving the hand upward a bit for string tracking? Hope what I’m saying makes sense
