Teemu's interview + tremelo picking palm muted

so I’m replying to what Troy wrote here in my introduction:

(btw, how do you quote on this forum??)

“But if you’re referring to fast alternate picking, the good news is that we understand that a lot better. The latest thread with @sguitar outlines the basic methodology for approaching that, and this doesn’t change just because muting is introduced. The anchor position may shift to permit more palm / string contact, depending on whether you’re using a downward pickslanting or upward pickslanting posture - which we discussed a little in the Eklundh thread. But generating fast sustained movements is still about worrying about fluidity first, and accuracy second.”

I am. I have no issues with downstrokes. it’s all alternate/tremelo picking. So let me say that I’ve got the whole interview with Teemu. I watch it religiously studying everything he is doing. My NON-palm muted tremelo picking has definitely become more fluid making playing death metal much easier. but, when I palm mute, I lose that weird bend that he has in his wrist and always get tripped up. It’s very frustrating. So basically my “lead” playing has improved, but my rhythm has suffered.

One day I will put a video up in technique up, but it’s hard because I have a poor camera and not sure if I can capture it or not.

What you’re experiencing is (probably) the difference between two different motion mechanics: forearm and wrist. The flexed arm is almost always forearm movement, like what Joscho and the Gypsies use. When most players flatten that out, they switch to using wrist movement, like what John Taylor and Andy Wood do:

Specifically, we’d call this wrist deviation, even though it is often really a combination of flexion/extension and deviation. But that’s a technical detail.

The point here is that it’s ok if you find you’re good at one and not good at another — it’s a whole different technique! It sounds like the Teemu interview was helpful for you in developing the rotational stuff. Maybe we just need to get some more step by step material up there for the wrist techniques. It’s certainly on our list.

do you think you might put up a sticky thread in the forum explaining all of the definitions you have come up with? I know DWPS and lead pick slanting? but when I start hearing stuff like supination, wrist deviation, my eyes start swimming inside of my head

Forum “sticky” threads are a personal pet peeve - hate them. They get in the way, clutter up everything. I hate scrolling past stuff I’ve already read with no way to get rid of them.

We will have a much better solution for this multimedia “glossary” concept down the road. In the mean time, most questions you have can be answered by simply watching all the tutorial material on the site. Here’s what you’re looking for on the anatomical stuff:

thanks, this is good but i’d like everything like, DWPS, 2WPS, trailing edge picking, etc
