That Moment You Realized Why It Wasn't Working

Hi friends,

So in my pilgrimage to proper picking (heh) I’ve realized that a weakness in my technique that I need to try to focus on is my DSX playing, as it basically feels like I’m signing my name with my left hand when compared to my USX playing. To try and focus on this area, I’m using ascending/descending sixes since they’re a one-way picking lick. I’ve attached two videos, the first is me playing 6nps with USX which feels comfortable and smooth (for a baseline). The second is me playing the sixes pattern both ascending and descending, which is noticeably more awkward.

After watching me play it from the camera’s perspective it became completely clear that what I thought was DSX picking was really USX picking while holding the pick at an upwards pickslant. WHOOPS. After some experimentation, I actually found a REAL dsx motion that feels smooth. Video attached:

Anyways, if anyone has any tips on keeping that DSX motion consistent and making it comfortable, or other insight into why my DSX game is no bueno, I’d appreciate it!

Cheers,

Josh

I get the impression that you are holding the pick very tightly or there is quite a bit of tension in the forearm region? It doesn’t look relaxed to me.

Ya I don’t think that I feel very relaxed when I try DSX motion. At least not compared to my default USX picking
