The No Escape Picking motion

Help please. I have been following Troy for some years, and lately have been experimenting with pick motions. I have a motion with a supinated forearm, fingers anchored to the pickguard of my Les Paul, with a rather forearm rotation technique, I devised it by using the EVH tremolo technique but bringing my hand around so the heel of the palm is anchored. It isn’t bad, very flexible for fast and intermediate speed playing, but not fast or very fluid for tremolo picking, but it does allow me to change strings for say the 6 note Yng-style chunk phrase.

I have been experimenting with attempting wrist movements, USX and DSX, with and without supinated forearm, and with different picks.

Problem seems to be that my motion appears to be the opposite of doube escape, in that the pick curves into the gap between the strings below and above the string, on all movements except the EVH tremolo (to awkward a movement to use), and perhaps the downstroke escape movements, which wouldn’t be my preference in terms of hand/wrist position for picking. I don’t seem to have any other motion. When looking at Troy’s video for spotting the three types of picking escapes, Troy’s pick is clearly escaping, his pick is moving with bigger movements than mine. My movements seem to be small. I can’t seem to create a tremolo type of movement other than what I have here.

Any pointers or help? Do one of these motions look the most useful or likely to work on?

Contrary to the usual advice of ‘starting with speed’, in this particular instance I might suggest just thinking and visualising about which path you want the pick to travel (example: Wrist - straight line upstroke escape/downstroke trapped) and start slowly just trying to make that path of movement happen and getting the associated muscles and joints used to doing that.

Just an idea! I haven’t mastered any of the picking techniques myself but I’m getting there. Hope this helps.
