The Yngwie Malmsteen Strat

You’ve clearly never had a mexican mole sauce. :slight_smile:

Now, come on, don’t you think drawing a picture of me with shoes on my hands, gloves on my feet, and what I think are underwear on my head, is a little immature of a way of showing you disagree with me?

This is why I’ll be going the Warmoth route. EJ Thinline body. Yngwie neck.

For what reason is that?

I can get it built cheaper. I’m not a fan of the heavy gloss neck on the Yngwie strat I played. I really like how the semi hollow body on the Eric Johnson strat fills up the tone. I have a strat with Dimarzio HS series pickups and I vastly prefer those to the YJM Fury. I also might put some Graphtech ghost saddles on it for a piezo option since I really like the options on the Petrucci Majesty but right now I can’t justify the cost.

At the very least…use the yngwie strings…or you’re not even a man…:wink::rofl:

Is this now a post your guitar thread? Solar 2.6W
Amazing guitar.

Drew, check this out, unfortunately, named but man it’s funny, I didn’t see that drawing :frowning:

Stick with it, I get the feeling his amp is going to catch fire on the solo. Absolute fiend, tone slayer.

Not really, I just pulled some posts in an effort to keep peace. Those solar guitars are nice… I was considering one

I don’t understand you guys at all. :lol: But whatever makes you happy.

And NCASO, we don’t have to see eye to eye on gear choices, but DEFINITELY find yourself a good mexican restaurant where you can try a good mole sauce. You only THINK chocolate shouldn’t go with beef!

:smiley: It’s true, all my fault, lol! That’s why I’ve decided, in the name of diplomacy, to put 13 gauge on the Malmsteen…flatwounds… I kid, I kid… :smiley:

@Drew, you’re a good sport, sir!

The strings are on, now, and the bend-ability hasn’t changed on the high E relative to the generic D’addario single 8 I put on there. This leads me to believe that it’s all about that 0.001" diameter difference and not something metallurgical. I’m quite happy with the strings and I don’t seem to notice the heavier gauges on the wound strings. Those bullet ends are cool. I wonder if there’s an advantage to them.

Flatwounds… Now there;s something I think we can ALL agree don’t belong on a Strat! (Not because it’s not designed for it, but because so much of the appeal of a strat is their bright and clear attack. Though, of course, as I’m writing this, my curiosity is coming up a little…)

Fender swears the bullet ends promote stability by sitting more securely in the trem block than a round ball end. They also swear that their strings are integral to the “Strat” sound and it doesn’t sound like a Fender if you’re not also using Fender strings, but that, at least, is BS (and I used to fall for it, for the first couple years I played a Strat, so I’m not speaking from a lack of experience here). I’d say it seems like they could offer a minescule improvement in stability since the string can’t shift, but honestly a ball end isn’t going to really shift a perceptible amount anyway from where it settles once you tune it to pitch even if you’re routinely diving flat, and if you are your biggest source of instability is going to be the nut, followed by tuning pegs. If I was that worried, I’d spend $50 on a decent set of locking tuners rather than worrying about my ball ends.

(Actually, I think at this point all of my non-locking-bridge guitars DO have locking tuners, and a few locking nut/bridge ones, to boot, but that’s purely driven by how much faster they make string changes)

Tried flats on my jazzmaster when I first got it. Got rid them in short order. Only use em on my electric 12 string and lap steel now. Flats and bending do not coexist.

Agreed on the locking tuners, they are a must, especially on floating trem guitars they make string changes a lot less annoying.

I did have locking Kluson classic staggered tuners on a Grosh guitar once. I think the only advantage may be easier string changes. But thats just me, I really like the slotted vintage type the best.

We’re going far afield, but definitely try a good thumbscrew-style locking tuner. I’m not sure how “slotted vintage style” locking tuners lock though the locking tuners on my RG550 have some sort of slot locking mechanism, which mostly just annoys me because I always forget they lock in between string changes. But good thumbscrew ones - the Gotoh 510s are the best I’ve used but hard to find in the states (they also benefit from a low gear ratio, for better fine-tuning), but even Fender’s locking tuners are quite good - are IMO the easiest to work with.

And, it’s the kind of benefit you don’t really appreciate until you really spend some time with them - much faster string changes, great tuning stability, etc. Locking tuners and a well cut/maintained nut really are almost as good as a double-locking setup, and a lot easier to live with.

I’d love to get locking tuners on my yngwie strat, anyone know what specific ones to get?

Yeah, we’re def nit pikin now. I really think the YJM sig is near perfect for what it is, specially the current model.

I meant slotted are by design locking in a way. Ghoto makes really nice vintage type (peg hole type) Kluson vibe locking tuners that are staggered, diff mechanism, no tightening wheel, and very light! I like the low mass tuners for no particular reason, my brain says less damping, but I’m sure it’s nonsense.

I’m so content with my current situation, one guitar, one amp at the moment. I’ve got the YJM strat exactly how I need it to be. Amp is set, cab is set, DOD YJM 308 could be better. Not sure spending 600USD on a vintage DOD 250 is worth it, though in my case it just might if I can find one, my OCD won’t let me rest regardless of how content I might be to just work on my chops and music :smiley:

What is it that you don’t like about the DOD308? I don’t use mine as I stick with the Fender one, now. But the DOD is very open to mods. Especially clearing up that no-low-end problem you alluded to earlier. Both my YJM pedals are now far removed from stock lol.

Hey Drew,

I bought a pair of Fender locking tuners on Amazon for my Yngwie strat but they were too small. This guitar uses those vintage "angled " tuners. Do u happen to know which aftermarket locking tuners would work?
Thx
