The Yngwie Malmsteen Strat

Its great that you’re content with one guitar.
I’m still adjusting to the low string tension on the YJM strat, but I really enjoy playing it.

I find each of my guitars inspire me to play differently.

The YJM is my neo classical guitar, and has such a unique sound to it. Such an expressive instrument. I tend to play more measured on this guitar atm… again still adjusting.

My Ibanez prestige is just an awesome modern sounding guitar. The Fishman moderns are powerful yet articulate. The build quality on this guitar is fantastic.

With the ESP eclipse, I’m looking at a non tremelo guitar, with a darker , fatter sound. I’m going to remove the EMGs in favor of the Suhr Doug aldrich set. Hoping this will be my “muscle car”

Having three distinct guitars resets my brain and my approach to the instrument

No clue, I’m afraid - you could try emailing Fender? They probably make something appropriate.

Yeah I reached out to my contact there and he didn’t know…

I’m not sure exactly, I think I’m wondering how different the original DOD250 (grey) and HS3 would sound like, it’s a case of looking over the fence. There is a high frequency thats not the most pleasant thing, not sure exactly where, but I put it down to the need more time to figure it out with the SM57 and eq curves. What kind of mods did you do to them? I’m def going to have to get the Red Fender pedal too.

You actually gave me a case of GAS, been looking at LPs ever since you mentioned that Eclipse! I want a 4 knobber. Also been looking at a Washburn 29 frett guitar.

I changed the clipping diodes from silicon to germanium. That’s the main thing for taming the high end, in my experience. I’ve changed out the op amps, too, but the difference that makes is questionable. But still I had trouble with the high end so I put an EQ pedal in the effects loop and pulled down the 8k and 16k as well as some other tweaks. But what really gave me what I was looking for was that HS-3 in the neck position. And I say this with full acknowledgement that maybe my amp and pedal combo was bringing out the worst of the Furys. I’m not endorsing one or the other but I will say they are quite different in the neck. That “liquidy” old school Malmsteen tone seems much more dominant with the HS-3. I will also say that it is possible I would not have run down the road of pedal mods and EQ tweaks had I had the HS-3 in the neck in the first place. Make of that what you will.

What was your amp/cab situation?

Marshall 20W mini jubillee combo

That would be close to my RR100’s character… thanks for the information! I’ll get an HS-3 for the neck and see how I like it. Do you know if they make specific models for the neck or bridge? Have you tried it in the bridge position as well?

HS-3 is just HS-3 and has no neck or bridge designation. I have not tried it in the bridge but I was generally happy with the Fury for the bridge. I apologize in advance for acting as a gear enabler lol

Haha, no worries man; it’s always been an issue with me :no_mouth:

So dug around, there’s two versions:
DP217 (DC Resistance: 23.5) guessing this is for the neck.
DP117 (DC Resistance: 23.72)

I’ll get both and try them, gotta

I really like Blix’s tone from TGP. Here’s a clip of him doing the Perpetual first bit, incredible player.
He’s using the HS3 set.

Oh I think your right. The 217 is the SH4!

Check the first review. Sounds legit.

Yes, the HS-4 was once a Malmsteen signature model. I didn’t know it was preferred as a neck pickup over the hs3. Seems that if you go far back enough, he had the 3s in all positions. Should be interesting if you try both.

I have a Squier Strat with DiMarzio HS3/HS4/HS4 pickup config. The HS4 seems a bit brighter than the HS3 so it bridges the gap between bridge and neck pickup.

I got a cheap solution to my issues for now

That guy’s tone and playing… He’s using a Helix for most stuff you hear on his profile, great player, I’m definitely a fan!

Yeah Bill, he’s a fantastic musician. Yeah he’s using the DOD 250 emulation on the helix!

I have the Helix Native (plugin) on my PC, I should probably give it another shot.

Theoretically it should sound exactly like the hardware unit?

I just installed locking tuners on the YJM.
They look great and the work really well.
Hard time finding these, but well worth it.
Changing strings now much faster and tuning stability +1
