Looking hip bro
love open tuners; had waverleys on my lentz
Hey guys, how many springs you guys running on your YJMs?
I just noticed something. Had 5 raw vintage on mine, swapped them out for the original 3!
Feels more slinkey and I may be imagining it but; I think there’s some more upper mids happening!
Too much black art to this stuff. I like the 5 RW from my country days but the 3 regular is better for YJMiszms I think.
My apologies if I made anybody get the RW springs, things changes I guess, live and learn. Nothing is certain. The less I deviate from maestro’s gear the better it seems! I still think the RV saddles woke tthe guitar up a little more, but now I’m not sure it’s a good or bad thing since I got a real plexi and cab setup! Too manythings to try… hmmm.
That’s odd - the “more slinky” feeling makes sense and that’s generally been my experience too (and this could be placebo, but I’d say more so an arrow like /|\ than ||| paralllel) but the more upper mids seems unexpected.
NCASO - nice! looks great!
Absolutely befuddled, did if for a change of feel, was feeling stiff, but the tone thing, I dunno some mass thing maybe.
And I just swapped out all the saddles, the tone is much sweeter now! A/B’d it with recordings using the same string, surprisingly easy to reattach strings with slotted pegs!
When I put the RV saddles on this guitar I was using sub optimal gear and it sounded better to my ears then. In hindsight with the right gear, a plexi into T75s I don’t need that extra kick, the DOD YJM 308 and amp more than take care of that.
I guess I’m just balancing the scales out with the current rig. Also realized if you aren’t playing the right amp and setup, what ever I though of before was irrelevant to this setup.
I bought the raw vintage springs.
I went from 5 down to 3.
Set the guitar up to pull sharp, minor third
Tremelo floating,
I think the guitar sounds very good.
It is a bit too "slinky " though
I definitely need more tension on this guitar.
Should I go to 5 raw springs, or just abandon them altogether for a higher tension spring set.
I really have to have more tension here
Try 4, should be the sweet spot.
I had a hunch just to see why Yngwie is so specific about his spring setup. I like his way better. I could tell the diff with the plexi, but only because I just swapped it out, normally I doubt i’d be able to tell. These things are a bit spooky that way, sometimes it’s all in our heads. I go with my gut feeling on these things.
You should try both; always don’t be afraid to experiment; this is the reason I say learn to screw up and do your own setups; first day on the job as a programmer I was told if I’m not breaking anything I’m not fixing anything. Cause if you futz with the springs you are going to reset the claw etc. and going to a tech each time is just silly. You cant break anything, short of over tightening your truss rod, which itself is very hard to do, needs a lot of bloody minded determination, can’t happen by accident.
Go for it bro!
Yeah yeah, I’m going do it myself, get off my back! , I just go to the tech for electronics and when get I deep waters.
You’ve got the wrong impression of me.
I’m from Brooklyn Sid, sorry.
And I’m from India. Sorry
After all is said and done… I recently switched out strings. I submit to you , that you were right all along. The yngwie strings are great, but I have a pretty strong grip, and heavy touch… their looseness was making me crazy.
I got some advice from none other than Chris Broooks, and he advised using the Dadario NYXL 9-46. They really made a big difference in string balance across the neck. Its alot easier for me to gauge hand pressure with these strings.
So, Drew, you were right! I had to find out what was right for me in this instance.
There’s the Dean Karl Sanders V
Haha that’s quite a find.
Yeah, guitars are weird, man… All the various components of a guitar setup interact not just with each other… but also with you as a guitarist, and everyone’s fretting hand and picking hand are just a little bit different. Another player’s setup can be a pretty good/great jumping off point… But the whole package may not work for you and you may have to make a few substitutions of your own. Glad you’re finding something that works!
Blackmore Strat as well with those graduated nike swoosh style scallops that he prefers. ESP Japan made a sig for Hizaki from Versailles that is half scalloped (12th fret up) as well.
This thread makes me sad as I’m awaiting the scalloped neck I bought a month and a half ago on ebay to arrive.
Thanks. Going into it, you told me that this would be a series of “firsts” for me…
First time, singcoil, scalloped neck…
This is a challenging guitar no doubt, so I have to pace myself. Having a balanced string gauge with more tension really helped alot…
The tone of this guitar is exceptional, and the string control is great. If I didn’t love Yngwies music, I wouldn’t have bothered.
I dont believe there is another platform for me that can give the tone I’m looking for to try to emulate his stuff.
So, even though at times I struggle a bit with the control issues , I’m thrilled to have the custom guitar from the Viking himself!
No way could you cop Yngwie’s tone without singlecoils, for sure. Some of the other elements, eh, you could probably get close without scallops, but I have a feeling that has a lot to do with his exceptionally wide vibrato, for example…
Singlecoils relly are exceptionally vocal - really clear attack, and sort of an oddly open, breathable quality to them when distorted. I lohe humbuckers as much as the next guy and probably spend more time on one of my humbucker equipped guitars than a Strat… but there’s something just really expressive about how a singlecoil can respond.
Agreed. The YJM fury pups any not be the purest form of single coil as you know…
But for heavy rock, they are what I’m looking for.
I’ve played HBs my whole life and I love the sound of ths guitar. The scallop neck is great for bending, vibrato and string control.
The lyrical quality of this guitar is quite amazing.
I appreciate all the help you have over the months… I haven’t always been sane.
