Tips on returning to guitar after a break from playing

Often after a few days or longer, I find myself a bit wobbly and awkward on the picking hand especially trying to play YJM kind of material. This doesn’t last long but I’ve found two way to mitigate it sooner in my case. As trivial as these points are, they are personal to my situation, yours may be different. Thought we could list them out here, I need to print these kind of things out and stick it near my amps on the wall in big letters.

  • Keep my picking hand anchored.
  • Think with my picking hand’s index finger for accuracy.

I frequently take long breaks off (a week up to maybe a month) and have gone up to like a year off. I just try to have fun and play easy songs for a couple sessions until things feel more confident.

I need to do this more often; after getting into CTC material, I hardly ever relax with the guitar! Guitar time is limited and I want to keep the improvements coming, so I tend to push myself, I guess this is what passes as fun to me these days.
