Hey guys, I’m kind of new here. As awesome as this program is, I am having some issues and was wondering if anyone else is having the same issues. I am struggling to understand some of the lessons. I feel like Troy is a little too fast and I can’t really see or tell what he is doing sometimes, or what I’m supposed to be playing, or how I’m supposed to be picking the exercise. It seems like he is showing some of these exercises being played two different ways. So is there anyway someone can help me? For example, are there tabs for any of these exercises? That would be so helpful bc I can’t really see what he is doing in some of the videos. Other times I can figure out what notes he is playing but I’m confused as to how he is picking it. I think I’m a downward pick slanter. That’s where I seem most comfortable. But does anyone have any advice or any tabs for any of these exercises? Or any advice that would help me would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you! L.D.
OK I’m replying to my own comment LOL. Trying to figure this stuff out @Troy @tommo @brendan.schlagel @Adam any advice here to help me clarify some of this??? I see it say’s 5 replies to this post but I can’t find the replies, I do see some suggested videos so THANK YOU for that guys!
Hi, and sorry for the confusion! In general, we recommend everyone start with the Pickslanting Primer. It’s not heavy on exercises or fast licks, so if you’re seeing those, you may be looking in a different place. The early steps in the sequence do not involve trying to play fast musical phrases, or trying to parse what I am doing when playing fast phrases.
Instead, the key early steps in the Primer are taking the motion tests and recording your numerical results. Then trying the motion tutorials and seeing if you can do any of them. Getting smooth, fast, motion on a single fretted note is more important than playing any phrases at first.
Also, when you get that fast motion, you may also notice that it has a type of escape. Determining which escape this is will tell you which types of phrases you can play. Note that this is not same as the pickslant, and can’t be determined by trying to look at the pick and which way it is slanted.
Once you get this far, if you have any trouble figuring out fast single-note motion, and determining your escape, you should make a Technique Critique in your account on the platform with some clips of your playing – we’re happy to take a look!
FYI there are no replies to this thread other than yours and mine so I’m not sure where you are seeing that. Everything seems to be working normally on the forum, but we’ll keep an eye out for any bugs!
Thank you Troy, I may have just misunderstood what I was seeing. Maybe it was 5 suggested topics instead of replies. Your feedback helps, I will start there and do that. I appreciate this very much. This course seems awesome. FYI I’m an LI boy also! Thanks Troy!
