Trouble playing

Here is the two videos which hopefully show what I’ve been talking about

Just to be clear, which of these do you feel like showcases your best sync? This one?

or this one?

To me there are sync issues in both. Regardless, the way I’d tackle this is with the following:

  • Stick to one pattern, whichever you feel like you can play best. You’re navigating between several different variations. It makes sense you won’t be equally as good at all, so let’s pick the best one as a baseline and move forward from there.
  • It’s good you’re practicing at different speeds, but try to make sure you use the same motion at all the speeds, in both hands. At your slower speed you have a motion where the pick goes in the air on both up and downstrokes. It flattens out and looks efficient at your higher speeds. Try to move it straight, back and forth, at the slower and mid speeds too.
  • Similar comment for the fretting hand. Try to keep your fingers lifting a similar distance at all speeds. I understand some fingers will want to lift more (pinky for example) and that’s fine. But just try to have it move a similar amount at each different tempo you choose.
  • Re: the tempo, try to slowly increase it (or start at your fastest and slow decrease) and determine what the slowest speed is where the motion looks the same as your using at your fastest.
  • We have good info from the “Universal Picking Technique” video from the amazing Anton. His sync is better than just about everyone else’s (he may have a peer or 2 in that department). He says specifically in that video that sync is trained by making sure you do the same thing at all speeds. We know it it’s not possible to use the same exact same motion at all speeds (as they change while speed increases since walking != jogging != sprinting ect), but we can still attempt to use the same basic motion at all speeds and that will help.
  • Try to relax  I can hear the deep breathing  If you choose a simple pattern, attempt to play it while you watch tv or something so you can focus on something else and relax.
  • Attempt playing your pattern with a strong accent at the start of each repetition of the pattern

The one under the blanket feels best do you want me to do the one string or stick to something like that lick that was on all strings

Cool, let me watch that one again and make sure I have the same notes. Also…there are 2 of you??? lol! jax and familyguy1223?

Shit I used my wrong account. I made a backup in case my original got lost do you also want me to do the metronome with subdivisions.

lol all good

I think metronome with subdivisions is still step 2. We have to get reliable sync, with no external source, rock solid first. You had a few good reps but it’s still not “perfect” sync and we really need that on almost every rep in order to make it present everywhere.

Do you want me to do just the yngwie lick

Whichever lick you feel like you’re best at is the one to start with. I can’t tell your exact pattern but I think you did some that was sextuplets (12 10 9 12 10 9 ) and I think you did another that was more like straight 16ths (9 10 12 10). Any is fine, we just want the same exact pattern over and over to try to identify technical problems. Also, maybe accelerate the speed a little more gradually?

Should I just use the metronome without the subdivisions just straight up also how long do you want me to do this

No metronome please. Let me do a quick vid on what I’d like to see.

Cool thanks so much Joe

@jax and also @familyguy1223 lol

EDIT: just watching that, I can tell when I descend, it’s not as clean from 12 - 10 as the other notes. That’s the actionable thing for me to work on. If I just made the general observation of “ahh shit, my sync needs work” I could be chasing all sorts of ghosts. So to fix this, I can focus on it, OR try a different pattern that exploits that weaker area (12 10 9 or 12 10 9 10 or event 12 10 12 10 9 10 etc).

How long you want me to do this for? Also thanks for video

No prob! Just something similar to what I did there is fine, for the length of time. Goal is to establish something where we can get perfect or near perfect sync. If you want to take multiple attempts, that’s cool too. I’m sure after watching mine I could get a better take now that I’m aware of the little problem I was doing.

Gotcha I’ll post a video of it later this week.
