Ways of Picking a Scale

Hello all

I am mostly a gypsy picker at the moment and have been for a while. I was just exploring different ways of picking a scale and then wrote them all out.

Firstly I was wondering if you’d proofread my work. I’m not super familiar with economy picking in particular.

Secondly, any other ways of picking a scale like this that I’m missing? I guess there’s more legato options now that I think about it…

Any chance of a pdf? Would be interested to look at ir

It’s there! There’s two links.

I’m working on legato stuff now and updating it with some 4nps stuff. So it’s a work in progress.

I should have mentioned, this is sort of jazz oriented and this way of playing scales is patterned after Barry Harris.

This video explains it:

I was wrong. I hate that.

Funny, that never happens to me.

You could add in “reverse Gypsy” - this would be a purely DSX motion, using a hammer-on for ascending and upstroke sweeping descending.

Also, in measure 3 I’d consider picking the penultimate note Db with an upstroke, and then using a pull-off for C. That makes the picking more uniform with what follows on the D string (down up pull for both).

Reverse gypsy is a good idea!

I made that picking pattern because I thought it might be good for “swing” by accenting the offbeat, but I’m not committed to it.

Alright I did some updating

Some of this stuff I’m not super familiar with so I might have made mistakes. This was helpful to me in figuring out how fingerings and picking can go together.

The last 2 octave scale might just be over the top, I was just experimenting with it.
