It never hurt my progress.

If you train within reason, I don’t see how it would cause any issues.
If you overtrain in any activity (including weight lifting), there’s potential to fatigue your central nervous system, which might result in impaired guitar performance until your CNS recovers.
And if you do stuff that puts particular demand on your hands, like intensive “grip training” activities, I can see how your hands might not be in peak guitar shape while they’re recovering.
