Hi guys. I have been doing this for quite some time, not learning it from anyone, but just by intuition. It’s a take on Eric Johnson’s Fives, but with a small twist. Instead of using economy picking, i do a weird hybrid picking movement. It’s best if you see and hear. In my opinion, it creates the same effect as economy picking, maybe a bit twangy-er, because of the nail hitting the string. I am not a country player by any means, but this kinda has a country vibe to it.
Really curios about what you guys think.
Hi @Axeman23. I can’t watch the video for some reason.
I do a swybrid version of the EJ ascending fives, maybe you’d find it interesting.
For example, in A minor:
|-----------|-----------|-----------|-------3-5-|
|-----------|-----------|-------3-5-|---3-5-----|
|-----------|-------2-5-|---2-5-----|-5---------|
|-------2-5-|---2-5-----|-5---------|-----------|
|---3-5-----|-5---------|-----------|-----------|
|-5---------|-----------|-----------|-----------|
u m d d u u m d d u etc
i put the video on private hoping that it’ll work. let me make it public and check it out again.
Set it to “Unlisted” if you want it to be visible here but not via public YouTube search etc
yep, just saw that i have to do that in order for people to see it. done!
Interesting solution. Did you find it weird at first to use “m” after “u”? When I do hybrid it only feels natural to me to have “m” after “d” (sort of opposing motions).
I am also curious as to why you moved to this technique, IIRC you are a beast of a TWPS/DWPS/crosspicker, and you mentioned that you used to find sweeping a bit uncomfortable. What convinced you to do the transition to swybrid?
Thanks!
Well, honestly, it kinda came natural to me. I used to have an acoustic project where in learned to play bossa nova grooves and things like that. Using my fingers was the easiest method i could use to make the guitar parts work. And honestly, it’s the first time i hear the swybrid thing as an actual technique. So sorry if i cannot give more details, but i actually do not know how i can do this thing lol.
I remember trying to do it without searching for lessons on it. Then i found the mighty video series that Troy did and it kinda explained how to make it sound like Eric Johnson. At that point, i knew that i have this technique that i am using, and i thought that i can put it in practice for the fives. And it seems it worked.
