What app was used to create ascii tabs?

I came across and old USB drive and I have thousands of ascii tabs on it. I remember downloading these from OLGA back in the late 90s and early 00s.

What I am now wondering is was there an app that created these tabs? Google didn’t give me much to go on. I’m wondering if someone was sitting there with a copy of Word or some kind of a text editor and painstakingly entering in the numbers and reformatting the lines as they went?

I was wondering what they were using back in the 90s to create those ascii tabs. The first guitar tab app that I remember using was TuxGuitar, PowerTab and Tabledit. I was, and still am, a Mac user and my options were more limited back then!
