What kind of picking would you use here?

Hey guys,

So, I must first start this post by saying that I usually practice guitar using “Rocksmith 2014” which is a guitar game similar to guitar hero but with a real guitar.

Anyways, I was wondering, what kind of picking would you use here?

This is “Be careful with a fool” by Johnny Winter.

And also I’d like to know: How would you approach learning this song?

How to learn it? The first thing should be becoming one with the blues until the chord changes become second nature.

About technique, I perceive a lot of hammer ons and pull offs, so that simplifies the picking to “whatever works” because there are no particular patterns and bluesmen usually just go with the vibes (literally). Sometimes they alternate pick, sometimes they sweep the pick in a single direction while playing “legato” notes with the fretting hand.

I suggest focusing on powerful accents and vibrato even if the notes you are playing are not 1:1 mapped to the recording. It will definitely sound better that way imho.
