What's the best way to play this run?

I play this song with my function band at every gig. We do it 20% faster than original. The ending of this solo (@2:52) sounds messy when I do it:

I do it like this:
4x(7-8-7-5)|8-7-8-7-5-7-5-5---------
---------------|-----------------8-8-7-8-5
Any tips?

Why does it sound messy when you do it, where are things going wrong? If it’s the string changing, you could easily shift the whole run to only being on the G string.

Thanks for replying.
I think I have a problem with using ring and pinky interchangeably. I find it much easier to play 1-2-4 combination of fingers than 1-3-4

That’s pretty common. How about fingers 1 2 and 3 for this particular run, then? Or is that what you’re already doing?

I play it with 1-3-4.
I’ll just have to practice.
I never had to play a line like this. I guess I avoided stuff that relies heavily on ring/pinky combo.
Sorry I meant to say 1-3-4

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you’re skipping the ring finger? That half step between the middle and pinky feels pretty awkward to me - middle and ring feels much more natural. But that is me.

EDIT: I see your edit now. lol

That was a typo, I meant 1-3-4, sorry

There’s definitely no shame in avoiding 1-3-4. You won’t see Yngwie, Andy James, Guthrie Govan, and probably others I’m forgetting, using it. If you practice it and aren’t making any progress, consider trying 1-2-3 instead - shouldn’t be too much of a stretch in that area of the neck.

Yeah, and one can go up five frets for easier reach and use the D string, keeping the idea in your TAB.

I don’t hate 3 → 4 so much but 3 → 4 → 3 is a catastrophe for me.

In general, try and avoid 3 after 4 or 4 after 3. That’s not hard-and-fast, and some on here get militant about it.

Especially if you’re having trouble with a passage involving it. The transition itself can be problematic (anatomy plays a key part). Even if you nail the movement, many times it causes what comes before or after to be sacrificed.

For me - I only use it as an absolute last resort. Usually when playing someone else’s stuff.
