I’ve seen Guthrie Govan use this sort of thing a lot. I’m lightly laying my pinky across the strings, then hammering the note on with my left hand so it produces a harmonic. Does anyone know what this is called, or if they’ve seen other guitarists do it or something similar?
Muted/legato harmonics?
What ever its called, similar stuff is done by Zakk Wylde and others that move the muting hand. Check this out at 0:35, he calls it auto flanging!
Also try muting in different places, say 12th or 24th fret, might get some interesting stuff
Pretty sure Randy Rhoads did something like this in the intro to Crazy Train before the signature guitar riff begins. I also have no idea what this technique is called.
I think they’re called palm harmonics.
‘Palmonics’ surely? Sounds like a shampoo!
Is it similar to the sound EVH makes on “Youre No Good” solo on VH2? If so its fairly easy to replicate, you do hammer on/pull offs with left hand while sliding palm of right back and forth the wound strings…
it produces a cascading harmonic sound…
The type of lick you’re referring to is also illustrated in the Zakk Wylde clip posted above by @PickingApprentice.
EVH also does a lick like this in the last 15 seconds of “Sucker in a 3 Piece.”
